Dr. Kate Gregg

Dr. Kate Gregg (1883-1954), born on a farm south of Chehalis, dedicated her life to education, a pursuit that carried her across the continent. In 1916 she became the first woman to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. She was a professor of English at the University of Washington; Elmira College, New York; and Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri. A scholar of many interests, she studied history and wrote four major books that became nationally known—notably, Westward with Dragoons (1937). Upon retirement in 1949 she returned to Chehalis and became an active member of the Lewis County AAUW Branch. She passed away in 1954, at which time the branch scholarship program was named in her honor.
