Shirley (Stewart) Waugh (1915-2002) was a woman of dignity and fortitude. She earned a B.A. from Washington State University, taught high school home economics, acted as a home economics extension agent in several counties, then served as a navy lieutenant in the WAVES during WWII. In 1944 she married Burton Waugh and reared two children. She earned an M.A. in library science at the University of Wisconsin and served fifteen years as a college librarian with special interests in Northwest history and family genealogy. A discerning reader, she amassed a sizeable personal library. Lewis County AAUW President in 1975, she organized the branch’s first used-book sale, an occasion that grew into a major annual event that underwrites college tuition scholarships.
